Deciding on the right mask is arguably the most important decision one can make when taking up scuba diving. Below are some important factors to consider when picking out this crucial piece of equipment.
Start by holding the mask gently against the face. Make sure the strap is looped in the front and out of the way. Then, slowly take a deep breath, inhaling through the nose. If the mask stays in place without any air leaks, then it will create the right seal you need while underwater. Make sure the skirt of the mask is evenly resting against the face.
Be sure to adjust the strap for comfort as well, making sure it isn’t too tight and digging into the skin. If possible, attach a snorkel and put in the mouthpiece--or, if applicable, put a scuba regulator in the mouth. After doing this, check to see that the fit of the mask is still acceptable.
Lastly, ensure an adequate range of motion for the head. You should be able to look ahead, up down, and left and right in an unhindered fashion. If the mask is situated in such a way that does not allow for doing so, it will require further adjustment.
